Conference of the Parties (COP)
COP is a key component of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), where countries come together to discuss and negotiate actions to address climate change. The work of the Conference of the Parties is closely tied to gender equality in the context of climate change. It provides a platform for addressing the gendered impacts of climate change, promoting gender-responsive policies, and recognizing the important roles that women play in climate action and decision-making. United Nations
Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs)
MEAs negotiated international agreements that are intended to promote international cooperation to address global environmental challenges that the world is facing today like climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution and waste. The connections between MEAs and gender equality are becoming increasingly prominent as the international community recognizes that achieving environmental sustainability is closely linked to addressing gender disparities and promoting the active participation of women in environmental decision-making and action. Many MEAs, including the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), recognize the importance of gender equality and the role of women in environmental conservation and sustainable development. They often have specific articles or provisions that highlight the need to promote gender-responsive approaches to environmental protection.
